Obscure Glass

Sense of privacy without loss of space by using obscure glass between telephones, Las Vegas, NV

Obscure glass gets its name from the ability to screen out, or obscure, visibility through the glass while letting light come through. A typical obscure glass application would be a bathroom or shower where privacy is desired.

Obscure or pattern glass is formed from a pattern on a roller so that a repetitive design is pressed into the glass during the rolled glass process. The degree of diffusion is dependent on the depth and density of the pattern.

Benefits of Obscure Glass

  • Adds privacy where window coverings are impractical or undesirable (bathrooms, sidelites)

  • Various texture patterns provide a translucent or semi-opaque effect.

  • Obscure glass may be tempered.

Types of Obscure Glass

The following are types of obscure glass that we stock in our inventory, and one manufactured product, Etchmatte®, which is available in a variety of patterns specified by the user.

Gluechip A fine etched pattern glass that is made by pouring an epoxy on the glass and letting it dry in a high humidity environment. The glue is then chipped away, which removed portions of the glass. Thickness: 3/16"

Narrow Reed A directional type of obscure with a reed pattern. Thickness: 5/32"

P516 Our standard obscure glass, it features an orange-peel texture. Thickness: 5/32"

Aquatex Obscure scalloped pattern less image disruption than #42 Clear. Thickness: 5/32" & 3/16"

#42 Clear A rougher obscure scalloped pattern than Aquatex, one side smooth, one side rough. It disrupts the image behind the glass more than Aquatex. Thickness: 5/32"

Rain   A directional type of obscure giving the illusion of water running down the glass, primarily used in shower door applications. Thickness: 5/32" & 3/16"

EtchMatte® A custom obscure glass in which a ceramic frit is applied to the glass in either a pattern or a solid (pictured) using a screen printer . Thickness: 1/8", 5/32", 3/16", 1/4", 3/8" & 1/2" Delta Frost An obscure glass with a sand blasted appearance on one side and a random clear pattern running through it. Thickness: 5/32"
